چکیده

genus Podisus, have been reported as natural enemies of many insect pests in North America (McPherson 1980). In Brazil, they have been registered in plantations of Eucalyptus (Zanuncio et al. 1994b), Pinus (Teixeira and Villa 1987), soybean and cotton (Grazia and Hildebrand 1987), coffee (Gravena and Lara 1982), cashew (Silva 1965), passion fruit (Costa Lima 1940), avocado (Fischer and Patel 1989) and beans (Jacomino et al. 1989). For this reason, species of this group are important as biological control agents of many species of defoliator caterpillars and other insects, both in natural occurrence and in programmed releases (Zanuncio et al. 1994a). Species of predatory bugs of the genus Podisus present wide distribution and can be found in most Brazilian States such as Goiás (Zanuncio et al. 1991), Ceará (Silva 1965), Mato Grosso do Sul (Jacomino et al. 1989), Pará (Zanuncio et al. 1993), Rio Grande do Sul (Gastal 1981), São Paulo (Teixeira and Villa 1987), Espírito Santo (Moraes et al. 1983), Rio de Janeiro (Guajará et al. 1993) and Minas Gerais (Zanuncio et al. 1994a). Grazia and Hildebrand (1987) consider that Podisus nigrispinus Dallas, Podisus cloelia Stal, Podisus sagitta Fab. (=P. nigrispinus), Podisus thetis Stal and Podisus volxemi are the most common species of this group in Brazil. Although P. nigrispinus and Brontocoris tabidus Signoret are the best known Pentatomidae predators in Brazil (Zanuncio et al. 1992), other species of this genus, Podisus sculptus Distant is found in the State of Pará, Brazil and in Costa Rica, Panama, Peru and Bolivia (Thomas 1992). Few species of Pentatomidae predatory species have been used in biological control Rev. Biol. Trop., 48(4): 989-992, 2000 www.ucr.ac.cr www.ots.ac.cr www.ots.duke.edu

Development and reproduction of Podisus distinctus (Heteroptera: Pentatomidae) fed on larva of Bombyx mori (Lepidoptera: Bombycidae).

Biological control has been reducing the use of chemical products against insect pests, especially predatory Pentatomidae. Species of this group can present high variations in their life cycle as a result of their diet. Thus, the objective of this research was to study nymph development and reproduction of Podisus distinctus (Stäl, 1860) (Heteroptera: Pentatomidae) fed on Bombyx mori L., 1758 (...

Morphology and Postdepositional Dynamics of Eggs of the Predator Podisus distinctus (Stål) (Heteroptera: Pentatomidae: Asopinae).

The predator Podisus distinctus (Stål) (Heteroptera: Pentatomidae: Asopinae) has been reared to control lepidopteran defoliators. In this study, we describe this predator's morphology, postdepositional dynamics and eggs in different developmental stages under scanning electron microscope. Its eggs are subglobular and ovoid, narrower at the base than at the top, with a convex, circular operculum...

External egg structure of the Pentatomidae (Hemiptera: Heteroptera) and the search for characters with phylogenetic importance.

The chorionic structure of sixteen pentatomid species is described. Morphological patterns in different taxonomic levels are discussed. In addition, egg characters useful in cladistic analyses are listed, and some of those characters are tested for congruence with two cladistic analyses previously conducted within Pentatomidae. Descriptive studies were conducted with Banasa induta, Capivaccius ...

Parasitism and predation of stink bug (Heteroptera: Pentatomidae) eggs in Georgia corn fields.

Nezara viridula L. and Euschistus servus (Say) are the predominant species of phytophagous stink bugs on corn, Zea mays L., in Georgia. Oebalus pugnax pugnax (F.) occurs in relatively low numbers, and the predatory stink bug Podisus maculiventris (Say) is commonly found. Limited information is available on natural biological control of these four stink bug species in Georgia corn fields; there...

Biology of Brontocoris tabidus (Heteroptera: Pentatomidae) fed with Musca domestica (Diptera: Muscidae) larvae.

Development and reproductive performance of Brontocoris tabidus (Signoret) (Heteroptera: Pentatomidae) fed with Musca domestica L. (Diptera: Muscidae) larvae was evaluated. Duration of the nymphal phase of this predator was 31.2 days, with a 44.1% survival rate. Preoviposition and egg incubation periods and number of eggs/egg mass were 8.14 days, 5.6 days, and 45.4, respectively. B. tabidus pre...
